Songs for the Ride: Alaska

maggiepharrell

My “Songs for the Ride” series aims to share with you my ever growing and changing playlist for the road-trip through life… especially when they directly relate to our travels.

I love emotion.  I love aliveness, and having my heartstrings pulled, and awe and wonder and appreciation. I also love poetic subtlety, and when all of those massive human feelings emerge out of something quietly simple and tender.

I’m about to share with you a video that primarily features two people sitting quietly listening to a song.  What comes out is, to me, magic.

You may have seen this on facebook already… NYU Tisch music student Maggie Rogers is quickly rocketing to popularity, largely from this video.  It’s a clip of famed producer Pharrell Williams sitting in class with a group of Tisch students, to provide commentary and criticism for their work.  Watching his face as he listens to Maggie’s track is so rich.

The song itself is beautiful and haunting and hopeful, and has shot to the top of my personal listening list right now.  The imagery that the song opens with is such a perfect encapsulation of solo travel in nature, particularly the deeply healing, personally transformative, post-breakup sort.

Here’s what I mean:

I was walking through icy streams that took my breath away
Moving slowly through westward water over glacial plains

And I walked off you

then I walked off an old me

Oh me, oh my I thought it was a dream so it seems

Here’s a fan transcription of the full lyrics, (may or may not be accurate)

I was walking through icy streams that took my breath away
Moving slowly through westward water over glacial plains

And I walked off you then I walked off an old me
Oh me, oh my I thought it was a dream so it seems
And now they think I’m in heaven
you are now my serenity
life breathing I’m exhaling
you are now my serenity
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling
you are now my serenity
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling

I cut my hair so I could rock back and forth without thinking of you into dark and say whatever I wanted to

and I walked off you and I walked off an old me
oh me oh my I thought it was a dream so it seems

And now break free I’m in heaven
you are now my serenity
They’re thinking I’m exhaling
you are now my serenity
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling
you are now my serenity
I’m fall, I’m fall, I’m falling I’m falling
you are now my serenity

And in case you want just the audio, here’s an unofficial soundcloud link. (Maggie hasn’t posted the track on her soundcloud yet)
